Ryan Mack — Leroy Neiman’s painting Celebrity Night at Spago is one of the artist’s and the modern era’s most famous works of art. The famous work of art captures the essence of celebrity culture.  Leroy Neman’s art is considered among the most collectible of modern times, and his famous piece of art Celebrity Night at Spago is one of his most collectible.

Painted in 1993, Leroy Neiman’s painting Celebrity Night at Spago serves as an iconic image of modern popular culture. Leroy Neiman painted the famous work on site at Spago for the celebrity party hosted there after the Academy Awards. Neiman is famous for painting many of his famous works on site and in the action instead of in the studio. Not only did Neiman capture many of the celebrities in the venue that night, but he also depicted a number of other Academy Award winners over the years. The vibrant colors and crowded canvas create a fun and fast paced atmosphere that allows the viewer to feel a part of the party.

Leroy Neiman’s art Celebrity Night at Spago features the generation defining actors of the time.  Wolfgang Puck, the owner and Chef at Spago and of many Academy Awards ceremony dinners, is painted in the scene. Wolfgang Puck is watching George Burns along with Morgan Freeman and Michael Jackson. Famous film critic Gene Siskel is nearby. Billy Crystal and Bob Hope, both legendary hosts of numerous previous Academy Awards ceremonies, are in conversation with each other. Sean Connery speaks with Jeremy Irons.

Neiman paints the host of the party, “Swifty” Lazar filling the glasses at a table with Gregory Peck and Maggie Smith. Jack Nicholson is there conversing with Paul Newman, his usual animated self, complete with sunglasses. In the front right of the painting are the celebrities Neiman places the most emphasis on in his painting. In addition to being at the forefront of the scene, they are also most colorful than the rest and painted with greater detail. The two celebrities that this Leroy Neiman artwork depicts in the forefront are Elizabeth Taylor, admiring an Oscar Statuette that she holds; she is pictured next to Whoopi Goldberg, who would go on to host next year’s Academy Awards ceremony.

Interestingly enough, this Leroy Neiman artwork, Celebrity Night at Spago, is absent many of the year’s biggest winners and award’s nominees. The painting is considered to pay homage to the history of the Academy Awards as an institution instead of providing a snapshot of one year’s results. Clint Eastwood, the year’s best director and best picture winner is not painted.  The best actor and actress, Al Pacino and Emma Thompson, are also not pictured. Jack Nicholson is one of the only nominees depicted, and Gregory Peck is one of the only presenters depicted from that year.

Highly regarded for both its artistic skill and its pop culture references, Celebrity Night at Spago has become one of the most famous and collectible works out of Leroy Neiman’s extensive series of artwork. Serigraphs and other prints of this famous work have become highly sought after by art collectors around the world. Celebrity Night at Spago has truly become a standout, even as far as Leroy Neiman art is concerned.
